Cheapest is not always recommended
When choosing to hire a Handyman for your home repairs, improvements and maintenance projects, it may not be wise to hire the cheapest option. There are many factors to take into consideration and price is certainly one of them. However, there are other crucial factors to consider when evaluating your Handyman options. The old adage, “You get what you pay for” still seems relevant today. How many times have we all bought a cheap item without giving it much thought, only to regret the decision later? I know I have. Here are a few reasons choosing the cheapest Handyman may not be your best choice:
Insurance and Licensing:
In the state of Pennsylvania, a Handyman is requires by law to register and apply to the Office of the Attorney General. A lengthy application, proof of insurance and a fee must be submitted to gain approval to do work in the state. You must also renew every two years. Like many other insurance requirements, the state minimum is low ($50,000 of personal injury and $50,000 liability coverage) and with the price of everything these days, the minimum will not cover much. Although it is an added expense, look for a Handyman that carries at least $1,000,000 of personal injury and $1,000,000 liability coverage. Always ask your handyman for his PA contractors’ number and proof of insurance documentation. If you want to check them out, visit the web site of the Attorney General to see if there are any claims against them.
Quality of Work:
A cheap Handyman may offer low prices by cutting corners on materials, workmanship or rushing a job so he can get to his next one because he has to take on so many jobs to make a living. It may result in a sub-par outcome for you. By investing in a Handyman who does not cut corners, uses quality tools & materials, and takes the time to do it right the first time will ensure superior results that will pay for itself in the long run.
Expertise and Experience:
A Handyman who has more experience and invests his time and money in educating himself in up-to-date building codes, methods and techniques will usually charge higher rates because they bring higher value skills and knowledge to the table. They are better equipped to handle complex projects, navigate challenges, and ensure that the work is completed to the required standards. While their prices may be higher, their expertise can ultimately save you time, money, and stress.
Reliability and Timeliness:
Your time is valuable and you expect your Handyman to show up when they say they will. A Professional Handyman who charges higher rates does not have to take on every job that comes their way to make ends meet. They are able to prioritize their schedule, be punctual, and allow enough time to complete the project correctly. Choose a Handyman who has a proven track record of completing repairs and projects on agreed upon timelines. This results in less stress and provides you with peace of mind.
Customer Reviews:
Look, anyone can produce an attractive website and talk a good game, but what are their previous and current customers saying. Always check online and social media for reviews and ask your prospective Handyman for references, if you feel you need them. Try to steer clear of paid lead generating website reviews because these sites usually require businesses to advertise and pay a fee for your lead before they will post reviews. Google, Bing, and Facebook usually offer the most honest and accessible reviews.
If a cheap price is your only consideration for hiring a Handyman, please be honest with those you call to hire. A quality, Professional Handyman will tell you upfront that he will not be a good fit for you. Remember, while cost is an important consideration, it should not be the sole determining factor when hiring a Handyman. It’s essential to weigh the overall value, considering factors like quality, experience, reliability, and customer satisfaction, to ensure a successful and satisfactory outcome for your project.
