Stephen Covey said it best, "Begin with the end in mind". This applies to everything that is worth doing. Without a clear picture of the desired end result you will most likely run into many obstacles and mistakes along the way. When you are finished and have not achieved your desired results it is most likely due to a lack of planning and preparation. Whether in sports or in life in general, the desire to win should always be outweighed by the desire to prepare to win.

When baking a cake, if you do not have a clear end result, such as the shape, flavor and type, how can you possibly begin. You also need the correct ingredients in the proper amounts along with the proper tools such as a measuring cup, spatula, mixer, and of course an oven.

When beginning a home repair or improvement project you also need to have a clear picture of your end result. Follow these steps and you will not be disappointed with the results.

1. Is the repair or project worth it? I know this may strike you as an odd question but one you should ask yourself nonetheless. Ask yourself if this something you need or want is a good place to start? Will it add value to your life? If you are fixing an essential home item, is it cost effective to have it repaired or should you replace it?

2. Set a realistic budget by preparing a ballpark estimate of how much you will spend on the project or repair. You can find many free estimating templates online like: Nerd Wallet Estimating Template.

3. Decide if this is a project or repair you can realistically perform yourself or will you be hiring someone to do it for you. Ask yourself, what is the best way to achieve the desired end result? Do I have the skill and tools to do it safely? If the answer is yes, continue the process with this in mind. If the answer is no, start researching qualified home service providers.

4. Estimate the cost of the project or repair. Start the process by compiling a detailed list of all the items desired from start to finish. Be sure to specify exactly what you want. If you have decided to hire a home service provider compile a list based on your needs. For large projects such as an addition or full-blown remodel you may need a general contractor as they will oversee the entire project from start to finish. If it is a smaller project or repair your best choice may be to hire a qualified Handyman as they have a vast skill-set and may be able to perform all the tasks needed. Be sure your outside provider is certified and/or registered and is fully insured.

5. Seek a minimum of three quotes or estimates for larger projects but one or two may be fine for smaller items or repairs. You should add at least a 15% - 20% contingency fund for unforeseen problems and changes that occur on most projects. If you are undertaking the project yourself your contingency fund should be higher as you may have overlooked items a professional would have included in the estimate.

6. Once you have the prices in hand do the prices fit your budget? If the answer is yes, you are ready to begin the project. If the answer is no, set priorities and trim the project to fit your budget: Your dreams and budget may not always be aligned? Carefully scale down your project and chances are you’ll end up satisfied. Talk to your provider for suggestions on cutting costs such as, lower-cost material alternatives, keeping/restoring older items that are still in working condition, making the project scope smaller, and the possibility of buying the materials yourself.

With the end in mind, you are now ready to draw up detailed final plans and begin the project with your expectations well aligned with that vision.
